Great Lakes Science Center now offers free general admission to the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, Great Lakes Science Center and special exhibitions on Tuesdays to all youth (visitors 18 and under or any student up through 12th grade.) Spanish Class 09/27/2011
 
My name is SaRee' Lamb, and I am just putting out some feelers to see if there is any interest in the home school community with regards to a Spanish class. Our family has home schooled for the past 9 years, and we have really enjoyed the adventure! I have taught a small Spanish class out of my home for the past couple of years, but am considering the possibility of moving it to Ashland so that it would be more accessible to others who may have interest. My family and I were missionaries in Bolivia, South America for 6 years and learned to speak Spanish there. To me, languages are a blast, like a giant jig-saw puzzle that you get to take apart, see how it works and then put it back together again. So I really enjoy the challenge of teaching Spanish to young people. I use the TPRS curriculum (Total Physical Response with Storying) as my base and then throw some grammar exercises in just for fun. The focus of this approach to languages is on building the comprehension basis of usable Spanish through the use of many pictures, objects, and stories to peak the interest and provide context. I can teach entry level, intermediate or higher levels of Spanish, depending on interest and how much Spanish the student has already taken in the past. The entry level Spanish class would focus mainly on listening and understanding while the higher levels would add some reading and writing exercises, as well. 

I also am flexible as to the time frame. The days that I have available are Fridays, so I could teach up to 3 one hour classes on every other Friday morning, or we could do up to 3 different blocks of classes, 6 weeks each, one for each level. It is important that the classes be close enough together that the students are able to retain the information without having to do extensive reviews each class session.

Hoping to begin classes on Friday mornings (meeting every other Friday), starting October 21st at the Ashland Brethren in Christ Church. Cost would be $5 per student per class. ($10 cap for families with more than one child.) This first session would be 10 weeks. (Possibly 12 weeks) No materials would be required, just paper and pencil.

Do you know people who talk about kids who can learn and kids who can’t? Or, kids who can be helped and kids who can’t? Well, they are wrong, and I’ll tell you why.
 
Some 30-odd years ago, the great Japanese teacher, Dr. Suzuki, who taught over 20,000 children to understand and play the violin like virtuosi, had some words of wisdom to share with us. He said, “People today are like gardeners who look sadly at ruined saplings and shake their heads, saying the seeds must have been bad to start with - not realizing that the seed was all right, and that it was their method of cultivation that was wrong. They go on their mistaken way, ruining plant after plant. It is imperative that the human race escape from this vicious circle.”  These words have value even today.
 
You see, Dr. Suzuki did not believe that some children were gifted while others were not. He believed that every child could be superior, and that every child could be educated. Talent, he believed, was no accident of birth, but a purposeful effort, a powerful creation.
 
Let’s teach our children to understand that when they see someone of ability, they see a person who has been carefully taught, and who has worked hard to realize their unlimited potential. Let’s teach them that they have the same unlimited potential. And let’s teach them to believe in sustained effort, self-discipline and self-determination.
 
We have the opportunity and the ability to raise an entire generation of superstars every day. Why would we settle for less?

The next Narnia class (in which we plan to study Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader ) will be held on Thursdays at the Brethren in Christ Church on Mifflin Avenue, beginning September 29 at 1:30 p.m.

I am working out a syllabus that will get us done before Christmas (but probably not much before--as we are starting later than in previous terms).

I'm soooooooooooooooooooo excited to announce the completion of my "e-book + forms on CD" called "Real-Life Homeschool Tools 'n' Tips for Tots-Tweens"!!!  The subtitle is "Forms (plus explanations) for Organizing, Notebooking, Record-keeping, and Real-Life Learning"!!  It's actually three books PLUS the forms ~ 145 of them!!! ~ on CD!!!  So the forms, like the high school ones, you can open up on your computer, edit, and print!!  This will replace the Booklet Building Book and The Jumpstart Navigator and "Real-Life Homeschool Record-Keeping" (which was a stack of forms plus an audio tape), so now EVERYTHING is on ONE comprehensive, user-friendly, full-of-pictures, explanations AND "the heart stuff" behind and undergirding it all!!!!!!  It's the culmination of 22+ years of pre-high school homeschooling, and I am thrilled with how it has turned out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I just got it done last night, and am sending out the CD's to those who pre-ordered it today!!!!!!!

This is from Meg Dobucki at the Wooster Library. She is the homeschool contact at the library and one of the things that she does is put together homeschool kits based on your requests. She has done several for us including animals in winter, the Amish, and the Great Lakes.

*The What and How of Record Keeping and Building a High School Transcript*

Have you begun or are you considering home schooling your high school teen? This workshop is designed for you if you are concerned with record keeping and transcript building. Many people are not even sure exactly what a transcript is. A clear and complete transcript is an important support of the diploma that you issue your teen. In this two hour seminar Diane Monreal will walk through record keeping and transcript building using the binder developed for her own children.
